Retrograde planets in a birth chart
A natal retrograde marker means a planet’s apparent zodiac longitude was decreasing at the birth instant as viewed from Earth. The planet did not reverse its physical orbit. Astrological traditions use that marker as another interpretive detail, often exploring revision or inward attention. It is part of the saved birth chart, rather than a prediction about today.

A change in viewpoint
Earth and the other planets move at different rates around the Sun. From our moving viewpoint, a planet can appear to slow, pause, and travel backward against the distant sky before resuming direct motion. For the outer planets this can happen as Earth overtakes them.
An astronomical description of this apparent motion does not establish the astrological meaning assigned to it. Keeping those explanations separate makes the chart easier to understand: calculation supplies a position and speed, and interpretation supplies a reflective vocabulary.
How LunarOtter marks retrograde
The engine returns longitude speed at the birth instant. A negative speed produces the retrograde flag; a nonnegative speed does not. Signs, houses, and aspects still come from the same full-precision snapshot. A displayed R is a readable label for the flag rather than an extra position.
Near a station, speed may change sign within a birth-time window. That change is material to our approximate-time eligibility policy. The complete reading is not offered if the available interval cannot support a stable flag alongside the other required classifications.
Read the whole placement
A Mercury retrograde interpretation might explore how an explanation develops through revision. That possibility needs the rest of Mercury’s placement and its relationships for context. It does not mean that the person cannot communicate, must repeat a particular difficulty, or should avoid a category of decisions.
Slower planets can remain retrograde for extended intervals, so many people share the same flag. LunarOtter gives personal placements and their connections more interpretive weight than a generic list of outer-planet retrogrades. The reference table still retains every calculated body.
Natal information and current motion are different
A birth chart records a moment. A current retrograde calendar describes another time. LunarOtter’s product is the saved natal chart and reading; it does not supply transits, daily forecasts, or instructions for timing purchases and relationships.
If you encounter a strong claim about a retrograde placement, bring it back to an ordinary example. What actually needs revisiting? Where has revision been useful? A reflection question leaves space for your own evidence instead of turning a diagram marker into an obligation.
Questions people ask
What does a retrograde planet in my birth chart mean?
It means that, seen from Earth, the planet appeared to move backward through the zodiac when you were born. The planet did not actually reverse; the effect comes from Earth and the planet moving at different speeds. Astrologers often read a natal retrograde as a theme that develops through review or a more inward route. Retrograde planets are common in birth charts and are not a warning.
