Sun, Moon, and rising signs by placement

A placement is a planet or angle in a sign. These guides cover the three placements most people start with: the Sun sign, which describes purpose; the Moon sign, which describes emotional needs; and the rising sign, which describes how you meet new situations. Each guide explains one placement in plain language with a fictional example.

Questions people ask

What does my rising sign say about me?

Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. Astrologers read it as your approach to new situations: how you start, what you notice first, and how you get your bearings. It also sets the first house in Whole Sign charts. You need an accurate birth time and city to know it.

What does my Moon sign mean?

Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon occupied when you were born. In astrology it describes emotional needs and habits: what helps you settle, what comfort looks like to you, and how you tend to respond when something affects you. The Moon changes signs every two to three days, so your birth date alone sometimes cannot settle it.

What if my Sun, Moon, and rising are all the same sign?

Then that sign’s themes appear in three different roles: purpose, emotional needs, and first approach. Astrologers often call this a strong emphasis, because the same style shows up in many parts of life. It does not make you a stereotype of the sign. The houses, the other planets, and the aspects between them still add plenty of contrast to the chart.
