The twelve houses in a birth chart

By Sourdough AI LLC · November 1, 2026

Houses supply areas of life for an astrological reading. In LunarOtter’s Whole Sign system, the entire rising sign is house one, the next sign is house two, and the sequence continues through twelve. A planet’s house adds a setting to its sign interpretation. An empty house does not mean that area of life is missing.

Start with my rising sign. Bring your date, time, and city; your form progress stays in this tab.

Field figure · houses01
Twelve equal houses, one whole sign each. House 1 begins with the rising sign; the Ascendant marks an exact degree within it.

Count from the rising sign

Imagine a synthetic chart with Taurus rising. Taurus is house one, Gemini house two, Cancer house three, and so on. A planet anywhere in Gemini belongs to the second Whole Sign house. The exact Ascendant degree remains marked inside house one, rather than becoming its boundary.

This is a convention for organizing the chart. Other house systems divide the space differently, which can put the same planet in a different house without changing its zodiac longitude. Compare calculation settings before assuming that one chart has the wrong birth data.

A compact map of the topics

Houses one through four introduce self and approach; resources and values; communication and nearby connections; and home, roots, and private foundations. Houses five through eight add creative expression; daily routines and service; partnerships; and shared resources and commitments.

Houses nine through twelve turn toward study and wider perspectives; public contribution and responsibility; communities and collective aims; and solitude or what stays behind the scenes. These are broad interpretive topics, not promises about events, health, money, or relationships.

Read a planet in a setting

Take a fictional Mercury in the third house. The planet contributes communication and thinking themes, and the house adds everyday exchange or learning as a setting. Its sign refines how the theme might be expressed. A nearby aspect can introduce another voice in the same conversation.

The value comes from connecting the pieces to a real example. Ask where the setting is familiar, what the description leaves out, and whether another part of the chart offers a productive contrast. There is no need to turn every possible placement into a separate fixed identity.

What empty houses do and do not say

A chart contains twelve houses and only ten bodies in our standard list, so some houses will have no planets. An empty seventh house does not establish that someone will lack a partnership. An empty tenth house does not establish that public contribution is unimportant.

Time uncertainty can change the rising sign and move all Whole Sign house labels. We withhold house interpretations when the information cannot support them. The paid reading’s outline reports the actual number of occupied and described houses for the calculated chart.

Questions people ask

What do the houses in astrology mean?

The twelve houses divide a chart into areas of life. In order: self and approach, resources, communication, home and roots, creativity, daily routines, partnership, shared resources, study and wider views, public life, community and friendship, and solitude or what stays out of view. A planet’s house shows where its themes tend to play out. Houses depend on your birth time and place.

What does an empty house mean in my chart?

An empty house is normal and does not mean that area of life is missing or unimportant. A chart has twelve houses and only ten planets, so several houses are always empty. Astrologers still read an empty house through the sign it holds and the planet that rules that sign. An empty seventh house in Libra, for example, sends you to Venus for more about partnership.
