How to read a birth chart wheel
Start with the Ascendant at the left of the wheel, find the signs around the rim, and read the numbered houses inward. Planet markers show placements; lines across the center show selected aspects. Use the placement table for exact degrees. A wheel is a map of calculated relationships, not a picture of planets spaced across the physical sky.

First find your bearings
In LunarOtter’s wheel, the Ascendant sits at the left and zodiac longitude increases counterclockwise. The outer signs divide the full circle into twelve equal 30-degree portions. Whole Sign house one begins at the start of the rising sign, so its boundary may sit away from the exact Ascendant marker.
The MC, or Midheaven, has its own marker. It is calculated independently and can appear outside house ten in Whole Sign houses. Do not rotate it into the tenth-house boundary just to make the diagram look familiar.
Follow a marker to its actual position
The example below is synthetic and calculated by the same engine and ChartWheel used for purchased charts. Leader lines connect each label to its actual longitude. Labels can move around their ring to avoid collisions; the line endpoint is the placement.
Start by identifying the Sun and Moon in the accompanying table, then find their markers. Read the sign and house together. The sign describes an astrological style of expression, while the house supplies a topic or setting. Neither one supplies an event forecast.
| Point | Position | House | Motion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | 24°33' Gemini | 12 | Direct |
| Moon | 17°28' Capricorn | 7 | Direct |
| Mercury | 15°22' Gemini | 12 | Direct |
| Venus | 24°26' Gemini | 12 | Direct |
| Mars | 11°49' Scorpio | 5 | Retrograde |
| Jupiter | 9°51' Capricorn | 7 | Retrograde |
| Saturn | 10°19' Scorpio | 5 | Retrograde |
| Uranus | 11°01' Sagittarius | 6 | Retrograde |
| Neptune | 0°12' Capricorn | 7 | Retrograde |
| Pluto | 29°28' Libra | 4 | Retrograde |
| Ascendant | 26°57' Cancer | 1 | Direct |
| Midheaven | 10°49' Aries | 10 | Direct |
Read the lines after the placements
Lines through the center represent conjunctions, oppositions, squares, trines, and sextiles. Each relationship has a named angle and an allowed distance from exactness, called an orb. The wheel limits the number of lines so it remains legible. The full paid reference table includes every accepted aspect.
A line crossing another line has no additional meaning in this renderer. Its endpoints are what matter. Color and line style help distinguish the types, and the accessible table gives their names and values without relying on color.
A useful reading order
Read the Big Three first. Next choose a personal planet such as Mercury and connect its sign to its house. Only then add an aspect involving that planet. This order keeps an unfamiliar wheel from becoming a collection of disconnected symbols.
When comparing two websites, compare their zodiac, house system, time zone, and aspect settings before comparing interpretations. The same birth details can produce different house labels under different house conventions. Our methodology keeps the calculation choices visible.
Questions people ask
How do I read my birth chart?
Start with three placements: the Sun, Moon, and rising sign. Then pick one personal planet, such as Mercury or Venus, and read its sign together with its house. The sign describes a style and the house describes an area of life. Add aspects last, beginning with the ones that involve your Sun, Moon, or rising sign. Working in this order keeps a crowded wheel readable.
Why is my birth chart different on two websites?
Usually because of settings or inputs, not arithmetic. Sites can use different house systems, such as Whole Sign or Placidus, which can move a planet into another house without changing its sign. Some use the sidereal zodiac instead of the tropical one, which shifts most signs. A different birth time, an AM and PM mix-up, or a wrong historical time zone offset can also change the rising sign and houses.
