The zodiac signs, beyond birthday date ranges
The tropical zodiac divides ecliptic longitude into twelve equal 30-degree signs, starting with Aries at the March equinox point. A sign is a coordinate sector used in astrology, rather than the modern astronomical constellation of the same name. Every planet and calculated angle has a sign; your Sun sign is only one of these placements.

Why date lists have limits
Popular birthday lists give approximate Sun-sign boundaries. The Sun crosses a boundary at a specific instant, and its local calendar date depends on the time zone. A birthday near that transition requires time-aware calculation. Reading both neighboring descriptions cannot establish the astronomical placement.
A placement belongs to one sign at the supplied instant. Rounding a displayed degree must not move it into the next sign. LunarOtter classifies the full-precision longitude first and formats the number afterward. Unknown-time results may list alternatives when the whole-day interval crosses a boundary.
Elements as a way to connect signs
Astrological tradition groups Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius as fire; Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn as earth; Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius as air; and Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces as water. These groups offer a vocabulary for expression, practical engagement, exchange, and feeling.
An element is not a substance that a person contains or a measured trait score. It helps connect placements. Two placements in different elements can prompt a useful question about how you reconcile different preferences in the same situation.
Modalities describe another pattern
Cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. Fixed signs are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. Mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces. In astrological interpretation these groups are associated with beginning, sustaining, and adapting.
A sign combines an element with a modality. That gives more structure than a one-word stereotype. A reading still needs to consider which planet occupies the sign, where it falls by house, and what other placements connect to it.
Keep signs and houses distinct
Signs are the twelve longitude sectors. Houses divide the chart relative to a birth location and time, according to a chosen convention. In Whole Sign houses each house occupies one complete sign, but the two labels continue to do different jobs.
For example, the fifth house is a house topic regardless of which sign occupies it. Treating it as automatically equivalent to Leo erases information supplied by the actual chart. Our house guide walks through that distinction with a simple counting example.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between tropical and sidereal astrology?
Both divide the zodiac into twelve 30-degree signs, but they start counting from different places. The tropical zodiac, used by most Western astrologers and by LunarOtter, starts Aries at the March equinox. The sidereal zodiac, used in Vedic astrology, lines the signs up with background stars. The two currently differ by about 24 degrees, so a sidereal placement is often one sign earlier than its tropical one.
What does it mean to be born on the cusp?
It means you were born close to the moment the Sun moved from one sign into the next, which happens on slightly different dates each year. In the tropical zodiac a planet is always in exactly one sign at a given instant, so there is no blended cusp sign. Your birth date, time, and time zone decide which side of the change you are on, and a calculator can settle it.
